Matt Stone is best known for co-creating the animated series South Park and musical The Book of Mormon with his creative partner Trey Parker.
South Park, which has garnered 18 Emmy nominations and five wins for Outstanding Animated Program, is currently preparing for its 29th season. Since its 1997 debut, the Comedy Central series has remained a dominant force in both viewership and cultural relevance. Most recently, it was nominated for a PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy, representing the only animated nominee this year, and won Best Edited Animated Series at the 2026 ACE Eddie Awards.
Alongside Trey Parker and award-winning songwriter Bobby Lopez, Stone developed the hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, which premiered in 2011. Now the tenth longest-running show in Broadway history, the production has won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical, as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
In 2024 Stone and Parker released the documentary Casa Bonita Mi Amor, which premiered at the Tribeca and Telluride Film Festivals. The film became one of the highest-grossing documentaries of 2024. Previously, Stone co-wrote the puppet-comedy Team America: World Police, and starred in the comedy BASEketball.
Matt Stone, along with his South Park collaborator Trey Parker, was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2026.
