Alberta Watson was an actress best known for her roles on the television series 24 and La Femme Nikita.
On 24 she played Erin Driscoll, a special agent who clashed with the show’s protagonist Jack Bauer. In La Femme Nikita she played Madeline Pierce, a role that she carried on as Senator Madeline Pierce in the 2010 reboot Nikita, starring Maggie Q.
Over a four-decade career, Watson had roles on television series Hill Street Blues, Deadly Nightmares, The Equalizer, Law & Order, The Outer Limits, Soul Food, The Newsroom, Angela’s Eyes, The Border and Heartland.
Watson got her start in local theater while living in Canada, but it wasn’t until her breakthrough role in the film In Praise of Older Women that she started to attract attention, including a nomination for a Genie Award, the Canadian equivalent of an Oscar. She was later featured in the film Spanking the Monkey, written and directed by a then-unknown David O. Russell, playing the mother of a medical student played by Jeremy Davies. She also played the mother of Angelina Jolie’s character in the film Hackers.
Watson died March 21, 2015, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was 60.
