Alec McCowen was a British actor best known for his role as the chief inspector in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1972 film Frenzy, and as ‘Q’ in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again.

McCowen also appeared in the films The Agony and the Ecstasy, Henry V, The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York.

Additionally, he had roles on the British theatrical television series Television Playwright, BBC Sunday-Night Theatre, Armchair Theatre, ITV Television Playhouse, Studio 4, ITV Play of the Week and BBC Play of the Month, among others.

He was also a regular performer on Broadway, with landmark performances in Hadrian VII, in which he played fictional Pope Hadrian, for which he earned a Tony nomination; and St. Mark’s Gospel, a one-man show that was a smash success on both sides of the pond.

McCowen died February 6, 2017, in London, England. He was 91.
