Alvin Sargent was an American screenwriter.

Sargent learned to type during World War II after joining the U.S. Navy. It was a skill and a passion that led Sargent to three Academy Award nominations, including two wins for Julia (1978) and Ordinary People (1981).

Sargent began his Hollywood career as an actor in the 1950s, but quickly transitioned to writing, having penned episodes for numerous dramatic television shows: Naked City, Route 66, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Doctors and Nurses, and Coronet Blue.

Primarily known for adapting screenplays, his silver screen works also include: The Sterile Cuckoo (1969), Paper Moon (1973), Bobby Deerfield (1977), What About Bob? (1991), Anywhere But Here (1999), Unfaithful (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spider-Man 3 (2007), and The Amazing Spider-Man (2007).

Sargent died May 9th, 2019, in Seattle, Washington. He was 92.
