Anthony Geary was a performer best known for the role of Luke Spencer on the long-running soap opera General Hospital. One of the most popular actors in the history of daytime television, he appeared in nearly 2,000 episodes of the series over nearly four decades.
The Coalville, Utah, native developed a passion for acting at a young age and earned a theater scholarship to the University of Utah. He began his career in regional theater, including roles in classics such as The Subject Was Roses, in which he costarred with veteran actor Jack Albertson. Impressed by the young man, Albertson encouraged Geary to pursue opportunities in Los Angeles, a move that launched his professional career.
After guest roles on television series like Room 222 and The Mod Squad, Geary made his debut on General Hospital in 1978. Initially a short-term part, Luke Spencer became a cultural phenomenon, especially through his pairing with Laura Webber Baldwin, played by Genie Francis. Their 1981 wedding episode drew 30 million viewers. Geary left the show in 1984, returned in 1991 and remained until his retirement in 2015, earning 17 Daytime Emmy Awards and winning a record eight for Outstanding Lead Actor.
An indisputably towering figure in daytime television, Geary also appeared in films such as UHF and Disorderlies. And he never lost his love for the stage — including Shakespearean roles and contemporary dramas — often returning to theater between television commitments.
