Carmine Caridi was an American actor.

Caridi’s best-known role was that of mobster Carmine Rosato in The Godfather, Part II. Studio executive Robert Evans wrote in his autobiography that Caridi was director Francis Ford Coppola’s first choice for the role of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. However, Evans thought Caridi was too tall for the role, which instead went to James Caan.

Caridi also appeared in The Godfather: Part III as a different character, Albert Volpe, an investor in Michael Corleone’s casinos who is killed in an attack at a hotel in Atlantic City.

Caridi’s television work includes roles on episodes of Police Woman, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, Kojak, Quincy M.E., Starsky and Hutch, The Rockford Files, Taxi, Fantasy Island, Hill Street Blues, Night Court, 21 Jump Street, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Among his recurring roles on television: Angelo Martelli on 14 episodes of Fame, Dan Valenti on 24 episodes of Phyllis, and Detective Vince Gotelli on 15 episodes of NYPD Blue.

Caridi died May 28, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. He was 85.
