Cecilia Alvear was a journalist best known for her long career with NBC and her fight to include Latinos in television newsrooms.

Alvear got her start in the news business in 1971, as a television news production assistant. She worked her way up through local station jobs in Los Angeles before being appointed to run the Mexico City bureau of NBC News in 1982.

She covered wars and revolutions in Nicaragua and El Salvador, and produced several interviews with Fidel Castro, before retiring in 2007.

Alvear died April 21, 2017, in Los Angeles. She was 77.
