David Frye was an American comedian and impressionist.
His impression of Robert F. Kennedy during a performance at the Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York, caught the attention of talent scouts, which led to a booking on The Merv Griffin Show.
Other television appearances included The Ed Sullivan Show, The Dean Martin Show, The Dick Cavett Show, The David Frost Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Frye specialized in impersonations of political figures, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Hubert H. Humphrey, Robert F. Kennedy, George Wallace, Nelson Rockefeller, Jimmy Carter, and, most notably, Richard M. Nixon.
Frye parlayed the popularity of his Nixon impression into several best-selling comedy albums, including I Am The President (1969), Radio Free Nixon (1971), Richard Nixon: Superstar (1971), and Richard Nixon: A Fantasy (1973).
His impressions of Hollywood stars included Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Kirk Douglas, James Mason, George C. Scott, and Anthony Quinn.
Frye died January 24, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was 77.
