Florence Sando Manson was a pioneer for female newscasters on radio and local television and a broadcasting icon in Pittsburgh. In an era when female broadcasters typically eschewed serious fare, Sando took on hard news in the Pennsylvania metropolis from 1941-59.
Her best known TV programs were the 15-minute news broadcast Women’s Angle and The Florence Manson Show, where she interviewed public figures, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong. Some of her work may be viewed at the Paley Center for Media in New York.
In 1959, she moved to New York with her husband, film executive Arthur Manson.
She died November 25, 2013, at age 95.
