Jay Gerber was a character actor best known for his role as Stretch Cunningham’s brother on All in the Family, in a memorable episode titled “Stretch Cunningham, Goodbye.”

Gerber played Harry Moss in the episode where Stretch (James Cromwell) passes away suddenly and Moss convinces Archie Bunker to deliver the eulogy. It is discovered, to Bunker’s surprise, that Stretch was Jewish.

Gerber also had small roles on the television series General Hospital, What’s Happening!!, The Rockford Files, Family, Eight is Enough, Chico and the Man, One Day at a Time, Archie Bunker’s Place, Barney Miller, The Fall Guy, M*A*S*H*, The Twilight Zone, Night Court, Perfect Strangers, Highway to Heaven, Knots Landing, Valerie, Dallas, L.A. Law, Martin, Gilmore Girls and Alias.

Additionally, he appeared in the movies Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Three Wishes and his film debut, Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon, in which he played an insurance salesman across the street from the bank being held up.

Gerber’s brother was the late Roy Gerber, an agent and talent manager who was the inspiration for the character Oscar Madison in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. Roy and his wife split up and Roy moved into the home of Neil’s older brother, comedy writer Danny Simon, who also was newly separated.

Gerber died October 2, 2015, in Los Angeles. He was 86.
