Kim’s illustrious career spanned almost 50 years in an occupation where employment ups and downs were inevitable, but fortunately he was able to sustain a consistent and successful livelihood the entire time. The following is a glimpse of his contribution to the Television and Entertainment industry.
In the early 1970s Kim knew that Publicity and Public Relations was his goal so following the advice of the experts, he starting out at NBC Universal as a page. He soon moved up to an apprentice publicist and then onto a junior publicist in short order. Right off the bat he was assigned a project for three months with Alfred Hitchcock on a movie called Frenzy! Not bad for a beginner. In 1973 he was assigned to work on a George Lucas film, American Graffiti, and the rest is history!
Over the next three decades, Kim’s resume included Vice-President positions at MGM Worldwide TV, Disney, Lorimar, 20th Century Fox, NBC, Columbia Pictures, and USA Network. His Public Relations responsibilities included Vice President of Photography and New Media, National Director of Publicity, International and National Film Festivals and was known as “The Industry Awards Guru.” Some of the well-known shows that he spearheaded publicity for were; Police Woman, Dallas, Desperate Housewives, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest, In the Heat of the Night, Thirty Something, Special Edition and Monk, to name a few.
In addition to his time with the Studios, his resume included independent endeavors. He was the Publicity Manager for the opening of Hollywood Universal City’s CITY WALK. He also taught “Writing for Public Relations” at UCLA for 15 years and for 2 years at California State University at Northridge. For the eight years before he retired, he was the owner and president of his own Public Relations firm entitled “The Awards Group.” He and his partner were television awards consultant and facilitators, not just for the Emmys but literally any award that was appropriate for his clients. Some of them included A&E, Lifetime, The History Channel and Reelz. He was a beloved member of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Kim retired in 2014 with a lifetime of devoted service to his beloved Entertainment Industry.
