Les Brown was a journalist and author who was one of the first in his field to cover television from the medium's beginnings. He wrote about TV for the trade publication Variety and The New York Times, and also founded the influential magazine devoted to the small screen, Channels of Communication. In addition, he published seven books, including an in-depth television encyclopedia.

Brown also branched into academia with teaching positions at Yale and Columbia universities and as a lecturer at Fordham University.

He died on November 4, 2013, at age 84.
