Mary Anderson was an actress who is remembered for the classic movie Gone With the Wind — auditioned for the lead role of Scarlett O’Hara, which eventually went to Vivien Leigh, but was cast in the supporting role as Maybelle Merriwether. She went on to appear in many other films as well as a number of television programs of the 1950s and ’60s.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson was a college student when she was spotted by director George Cukor, who was directing Gone with the Wind at the time and was looking for actresses to play Scarlett. The film was eventually directed by Victor Fleming.

After appearing in Gone with the Wind, she had roles in several films of the 1940s and ’50s, including Wilson, The Song of Bernadette and Lifeboat, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Her television credits included The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse, Racket Squad, Schlitz Playhouse, Lux Video Theatre, Climax!, Perry Mason and My Three Sons. She also had a recurring role on Peyton Place.

Anderson died April 6, 2014, in Burbank, California. She was 96.
