Peter Donat was a Canadian-American actor.

Donat emigrated to the United States in 1950, studied drama at Yale University, and first came to attention as a stage actor in the lead of a production of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Donat worked extensively in films. Some of his more prominent roles include The Godfather: Part II (with Al Pacino), The Hindenburg (with George C. Scott), F.I.S.T. (with Sylvester Stallone), The China Syndrome (with Jane Fonda), Tucker: The Man and His Dream (with Jeff Bridges), and The War of the Roses (with Michael Douglas).

His numerous guest-starring appearances on television came on such series as Mission: Impossible, I Spy, The F.B.I., Medical Center, The Waltons, Mannix, Hawaii Five-0, McMillan & Wife, Charlie’s Angels, Lou Grant, Hart to Hart, Hill Street Blues, Simon & Simon, and Murder, She Wrote.

On Dallas, he portrayed a doctor who treated the notorious Texas oilman J. R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) after he had been shot in a famous cliffhanger episode in 1980.

Donat recurred as Bill Mulder, the adoptive father of agent Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny) on The X-Files.

Donat died September 10, 2018, in Point Reyes Station, California. He was 90.
