Peter Vaughan was a British actor best known in the U.S. for the role of Maester Aemon, in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Vaughan was also known for his role on the British series Porridge.

With more than 200 screen credits to his name, and a bevy more on stage, Vaughan’s prolific career spanned six decades. He appeared on a mix of American and British television series, including Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, Coronation Street, Great Expectations, Madigan, Full House and Doc Martin.

Additionally, Vaughan had roles in the films Straw Dogs, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Crucible, Les Misérables, Kiss Kiss (Bang Bang), The Remains of the Day, An Ideal Husband, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, Death at a Funeral and Is Anybody There?

He died December 6, 2016, in England. He was 93.
