Phyllis Coates was an American actress best known as television's first Lois Lane in the 1950's Adventures of Superman.

Beyond Superman, Coates appeared in Death Valley Days, The Lone Ranger, This Is Alice, Perry Mason, and Gunsmoke and on the silver screen in Jungle Drums of Africa, Panther Girl of the Kongo, Girls in Prison, I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, The Babymaker and Goodnight, Sweet Marilyn.

In one of the last roles of her career, Coates played the mother of Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane on the 1990s TV series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
