Phyllis Newman was an American actress and singer.
On Broadway, she won Tony Awards for her performances in the musicals Subways Are for Sleeping and I Can Get It for You Wholesale.
Newman also appeared on the silver screen in films such as Picnic (1956), Let's Rock (1958), Bye Bye Braverman (1968), To Find a Man (1972), Mannequin (1987), The Beautician and the Beast (1997), A Price Above Rubies (1998), and The Human Stain (2003).
Her television appearances included: The Wild Wild West, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Burke's Law, Murder She Wrote, Coming of Age, and 100 Centre Street.
Also a talk-show regular, Newman was the first woman to substitute for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In addition, she appeared as a game show panelist on To Tell the Truth, What's My Line?, and Match Game.
Newman died September 15th, 2019, in New York City, New York. She was 86.
