Richard F. Newman was a writer best known for penning stories for television Westerns during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Newman wrote scripts for the shows The Restless Gun, Johnny Ringo, Bonanza, National Velvet, Tales of Wells Fargo and Laramie.

He also wrote several episodes of the series The Rebel, which followed the story of a former Confederate Army private after the end of the Civil War, as he helped settlers threatened by villains. Newman wrote a memorable episode of the series that featured a guest performance by Johnny Cash, who also sang the show’s theme song, "The Ballad of Johnny Yuma."

Newman died on February 11, 2016, in Thousand Oaks, California. He was 87.
