Rickey Smith was a singer and performer, best known for his run on season two of American Idol. Smith placed eighth and became close friends with season two winner Ruben Studdard.

Smith grew up in Keene, Texas, and got his start as a performer by singing in church. Prior to trying out for Idol, he worked as a school teacher. While on the reality competition program, he memorably sang "One Last Cry," "It Might Be You" and "Let's Groove," the last by Earth, Wind, and Fire.

The singer participated in the American Idols Live tour following his run on the show. After which, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. He recorded an album which was never released, and ultimately moved back to Oklahoma.

Smith died in a car crash on May 6, 2016, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 36.
