Life in the Intersection Between Advertising and Television
A panel discussion at AICP presented by The Television Academy
A panel of leading storytellers who are navigating the world of content for TV, Branded Content and Commercials.
In the early days of radio and television you had sponsored programs and a struggle emerged with how to pay for programming and maintain quality. Advertisers were reaching out to broadcasters trying to influence the content and entertainers struggled with how they should interact with advertisers - should they embrace the brand's products, or should they get the brand to recognize that the audience was there because of the entertainer? It was Pat Weaver who developed the idea of multiple sponsors for a show in a magazine format so no one sponsor would dominate and try to influence, or, appear to have creative influence.
As we all know, this discussion isn't simple and it continues today and we are all looking for ways to integrate marketing within content, associate brands with content, or engage brands to pay for content.
And it is frequently commercial production that is the test ground for new development be it in color, visual effects, or new technologies spending more per second, more per pixel in ways to enhance stories. Then those techniques are later taken to film and television production.
Talking about how to develop content and develop branding has never been more entwined both from the fact that we are in the era of TV everywhere and we have content being produced by networks, platforms, ad agencies, production companies, brands, and every kid who has a 4k camera in their pocket that comes with an edit suite.
This nexus between creating marketing messages and entertainment programming, and sometimes both, can expand and contract, but in all cases, storytelling plays a key component. We wanted to explore this intersection with people who are creating a successful content in these distinct and blended areas.

Hannes and his partner John McKelvey are the creatives behind the great short film "Corazon" for Montefiore Hospital that premiered at Tribeca last year, won the 2018 Cannes Lions Grand Prix and many more (including the fact it did quite well at last night's AICP Next Awards). In they won the 2017 Outstanding Commercial Emmy for Shopping for JohnMalkovich.com which they created for Squarespace. They have been rated number one creative directors in the US by The One Club and have helped the world's leading brands, athletes and celebrities tell authentic stories in culture for 15 years, including Nike, Under Armour and Apple, in the USA, Europe and Australasia. Cianti started his career in Germany then met McKelvey when they both were working in Sydney. They came to NY in 2012 where they worked at R/GA and Droga5 before founding JohnxHannes.Violaine Etienne, the founder and executive producer at Serial Pictures
Producer of the Montefiore film "Corazon" and producer of the Outstanding Commercial Emmy Winner in 2011 - Chrysler's "Born of Fire". Violaine founded Serial Pictures in 2008 in partnership with Anonymous Content after producing fashion shows for 10 years for the likes of John Galliano, Dior, Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Victoria's Secret. At Serial Pictures she has produced commercials and branded content for Adidas, Apple, Beats, Calvin Klein, Cadillac, Chase, Cover Girl, Dior, Disney, Estee Lauder, Lexus, L'Oreal, Mercedes Benz and Ralph Lauren among others. She has also been the driving force behind some of the most iconic music videos and feature length music films for artists such as Beyonce (most recently Lemonade), Depeche Mode, Madonna, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift (The 1989 World Tour), Paul McCartney, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna and U2 to name a few. Violaine has garnered multiple awards as a producer including a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Cannes Advertising Grand Prix, along with several Gold Lions. In addition to overseeing production both both agencies, Brian was the Producer of the Spike Jonze directed Apple Homepod "Coming Home". In the years prior to his stepping up to run production at Chiat, he oversaw commercials and branded content there which included Nissan's series GT Academy and wide variety of projects for other clients including Airbnb, Gatorade, Nissan, Infiniti and more. His work has been nominated the Emmy for Outstanding Commercial 6 times and he has served on the Television Academy's Board of Governors representing the Commercial Peer Group for two terms.Angus Wall & Jennifer Sofio Hall are from Rock Paper Scissors/a52/elastic/Jax
This group of companies, founded by Angus Wall and his late wife Linda Carlson and where Jennifer Sofio Hall serves as Managing Director, started as an editorial house (Rock Paper Scissors) and expanded into VFX and finishing (a52), motion graphics, titles and production (elastic) and film and tv marketing (Jax). Angus (and his co-editor Kirk Baxter) won back-to-back Oscars for their work editing The Social Network and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Angus and the team at elastic have won 4 Emmys for Outstanding Title Design for The Man in the High Castle (2016), True Detective (2014), Game of Thrones (2011) and Carnivale (2005). The work they produce includes the Emmy-nominated and Television Academy Honors winning film "Winter on Fire", the Oscar-winning and Emmy-nominated film "Icarus", the Oscar-nominated and four-time Emmy winning film 13th. In addition to his renown work as editor, Angus directs projects including the HBO 30 for 30 documentary "First Pitch" the story about George W. Most recently co-directed and produced the Oscar and BAFTA-winning documentary "Free Solo" with her partner and husband Jimmy Chin. The pair's Sundance documentary "MERU" became the highest grossing independent documentary film of 2015, won the Audience Award at Sundance and was shortlisted for the Academy Awards. Prior to working with Jimmy, Chai produced and directed a number of other award-winning documentaries including Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love and Touba. Together she and Jimmy direct commercials and branded projects for Nonfiction Unlimited.
