KCAL9 and FOX 11 led the pack at the 57th Annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards with nine statuettes apiece. Multiple Emmy winner Bob Eubanks, a longtime Los Angeles broadcasting fixture best known as host of the classic game show The Newlywed Game and for nearly 30 years of covering the Tournament of Roses Parade, was honored with the coveted Governors Award. The ceremony, which was held at the Leonard Goldenson Theater on the grounds of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, was streamed via live webcast at the Television Academy’s official site, www.emmys.com. Hosts for the evening were Fred Willard and Mariette Hartley, and presenters included Maria Conchita Alonso, James Avery, Barbara Eden, Hector Elizondo, Lou Ferrigno, Harold Greene and Melissa Rivers. In the highly competitive newscast categories, CBS News at 6 A.M. was honored as outstanding daytime newscast, while FOX11 News at 10 took the award for outstanding regular newscast over thirty-five minutes for the second consecutive year. Outstanding regularly scheduled half-hour newscast went to CBS2 News at 11. Immediately prior to receiving his Governors Award, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement in the Los Angeles market, Eubanks was honored with an Emmy for outstanding coverage of a live event, for the Tournament of Roses Parade. Eubanks, who began his broadcasting career as a top rock ’n’ roll disc jockey before segueing into television, has also distinguished himself as a producer, promoter, personal manager and, most recently, as a motivational speaker. The award was presented by Leeza Gibbons, a longtime friend and colleague whose moving tribute clearly touched the genial Eubanks deeply. “I usually have some smart aleck remark,” he said, “but I am speechless.” In second place behind KCAL and FOX11 were CBS2 and NBC4, which won six Emmys each; FSN West was third with five; and KMEX, KTLA5 and KVEA shared fourth place with four statuettes apiece. KCET and LACITYVIEW35 garnered two, and ABC7, BEVERLY HILLS NETWORK 101, KAZA and KOCE each took home one.
