The best in costuming was honored at the seventh annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, held on Saturday, February 19, at the Beverly Hilton.
Among television contenders, HBO ruled the wardrobe rack: Sex and the City clotheshorse Patricia Field won in the contemporary category, and Jill Taylor prevailed in the period and fantasy category for the film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.
Feature film winner in the contemporary film category was Milena Canonero for the Touchstone release The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, and in the period/fantasy category, Colleen Atwood triumphed for Paramount’s Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Among commercials, Jennifer Rade won for the costumes in Apple Computer's iPod “Dance” commercial—a seemingly counterintuitive choice given that all actors in the spot are shown only in silhouette.
In the honorary awards, Robert Fletcher, currently working on upcoming HBO series Rome, and an Emmy winner for the miniseries North and South, was granted the Lancel Career Achievement Award for Television. The Lacoste Career Achievement Award for film went to Anthea Sylbert, whose credits include Rosemary's Baby and Shampoo. Inductees into the Anne Cole Hall of Fame were Vera West (Arabian Nights, Dracula), Irene Gibbons (Kismet, National Velvet), Rene Hubert (Forever Amber) and Ruth Morley (Tootsie, Annie Hall, Taxi Driver).
The Distinguished Producer/Director Award went to Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, and Debbie Reynolds was honored with the Swarovski President's Award for her dedication to the preservation of classic Hollywood costumes.
