Julien Hug, a 2009 contestant on the ABC reality series The Bachelorette, was found dead in a remote area of California’s Riverside County November 3, 2010. He was 35.
According to news reports, the cause had not been determined.
A native of San Diego, Hug, an only child, had been managing Augusta Modern, a restaurant in Palm Desert owned by his parents.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department was asked to assist detectives from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to find Hug, who vied for the hand of Jillian Harris on The Bachelorette. According to the Riverside sheriff’s department, San Diego detectives believed that Hug was in a remote area in the San Bernardino National Forest.
During the search, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and San Diego police located Hug’s car on a Forest Service access road. A few hours later, a Riverside sheriff’s helicopter located Hug’s body in a remote area inaccessible to emergency crews. Because of the rugged terrain and the late hour, coroner investigators did not retrieve the body until the following day.
According to reports, no foul play was suspected. After the body had been retrieved and examined, it was announced that Hug had been suffering from depression and had committed suicide.
Survivors include his parents.
