Katharine Hepburn, 96

Actress Katharine Hepburn, winner of a record four Academy Awards, died Jun 29. She was 96.

Although she was better known for her work in film and theater, Hepburn made her mark on the small screen too. She was nominated for an Emmy seven times during her sixty-year career, and took home the award for the television movie Love Among the Ruins.

She also received 12 Oscar nominations, setting a record until Meryl Streep surpassed her nomination total in 2003. She won the Academy Award for Morning Glory, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter, and On Golden Pond.

Her work as an actress began on Broadway, with a role in These Days in 1928. A few years later, she took an offer from RKO studios to become a contract player in Hollywood. Her first film role was in A Bill of Divorcement opposite John Barrymore.

In 1999, a survey of screen legends by the American Film Institute ranked Katherine Hepburn first among actresses.
