Jace Lacob, TV Columnist for The Daily Beast and Newsweek, moderated this exclusive event, which was taped live at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences February 15 and brought to you by the Television Academy Diversity Committee.
On Switched at Birth, Bay Kennish (played by Vanessa Marano) grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother. Meanwhile, Daphne Vasquez (played by Katie Leclerc), who contracted meningitis and became deaf at an early age, grew up with a single mother in a working-class neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when the families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
The series uses American Sign Language and explores deaf culture with an array of deaf and hard of hearing actors.
