Henderson, NV – Larry Attebery, a fixture in Los Angeles news for more than three decades, died May 5 at a hospital in Henderson, Nevada. The award-winning broadcast journalist, who was 73, had been battling pancreatic cancer.
Attebery, who moved to Los Angeles in 1968 after having established himself as a respected radio and television newsman in his native Chicago, began his Southland career at radio station KNX-AM. Five years later he moved to KTTV-TV Channel 11 as a member of the investigative team. He eventually became anchor and, in 1983, news director.
From 1988 to 2001, Attebery reported stories for KCOP-TV Channel 13, including coverage of the O.J. Simpson trials, state politics and the LAPD corruption scandal.
Attebery, who graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, won dozens of awards during his career, including three local Emmys, seven Golden Mikes, eight accolades from the Los Angeles Press Club and, in 1999, the Edward R. Murrow Award. He was also a past president of the Los Angeles Press Club and of the Radio and Television News Assn. of Southern California.
Attebery is survived by his wife, two daughters, a sister and two grandchildren.
