Steve Bell, former senior vice president and general manager of KTLA Los Angeles, has died. The 66-year-old spent 38 years working as an executive in television management, programming and production.
Bell joined KTLA in 1981. During his 11 years with the station, he oversaw an array of projects, most notably the creation of the highly-regarded KTLA Morning News in 1991. He also led the KTLA during its pivotal acquistion by Tribune Company in 1985. Bell moved on from KTLA to join 20th Century Fox, running Network Television Production and founding Foxstar Productions. He later joined TCI where he ran 12 cable channels for the Starz/Encore Media Group.
Bell also served as director of the Beverly Hills Branch of the Museum of Television & Radio and recently taught courses at UCLA Extension. He delivered frequent lectures on the history of opera for the L. A. Opera, the Los Angeles Opera League and the Wagner Society of Southern California.
Bell is survived by his wife Bernice and children, David and Elizabeth.
