Chet Dowling, Prolific and Versatile Writer and Producer

Dowling worked on sitcoms, specials and kids' shows, many of them classics.

Chet Dowling, a writer and producer whose lengthy resume included classic television comedies, variety shows and children's programs, died September 6, 2011, in Studio City, Calif. He was 82.

Dowling got his start as a television clown in his native Rhode Island on a kids' show called Tip Top Circus, where his costars included future TV star Ted Knight.

He relocated to New York City In the 1960s, and continued to work on children's shows, often as a writer and producer. He went on to write and produce local programs, and later became a writer for Candid Camera and The Joan Rivers Show.

From New York he moved to Los Angeles, where he wrote 52 episodes of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. from 1969-71. He also worked on The American Music Awards and various specials.

Other credits included Donny and Marie, Alice, Three’s Company and Gimme a Break.
