Dan Frazer, Kojak Co-Star, Passes

Frazer appeared as Capt. Frank McNeil opposite Kojak star Telly Savalas.

Dan Frazer, an actor best known for the role of Capt. Frank McNeil on the 1970 television drama Kojak, died December 16, 2011, at his New York City home. He was 90.

According to news reports, the cause was cardiac arrest.

Frazer, the youngest of 10 children, was born in New York on November 20, 1921, and grew up in the city’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, which he drew upon for future performances as blue-collar characters and cops.

He began his television career in 1950 and appeared on numerous series through the 1990s, including The Phil Silvers Show, Car 54, Where Are You?, The Untouchables, McHale’s Navy, Route 66, My Favorite Martian, The FBI, Barney Miller, The Waltons, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Third Watch.

On Kojak, which aired on CBS from 1973-78, he co-starred opposite Telly Savalas. Years later he had a regular role on the daytime drama As the World Turns.

He also appeared in several feature films, beginning with The Lilies of the Field, in 1963, followed by Lord Love a Duck, Counterpoint, Take the Money and Run, Bananas, Gideon’s Trumpet, Fuzz, Cleopatra Jones, The Super Cops and others.

Frazer and his wife, the former Lillian Lee, were married from 1943 until her death in 1999. He is survived by a daughter, two sisters and two grandchildren.
