David Croft, television writer of British sitcoms, passed away September 27, 2011 in his sleep in Portugal. He was 89.
Croft created comedies after World War II including It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Dad's Army and Are You Being Served?, among others.
He also co-created multiple series in the 70s and 80s, including 'Allo 'Allo, which was set in Nazi-occupied France. As a veteran, comedies in unlikely places were Croft's forte. He frequently pulled from his experience in the Royal Artillery in his work.
At age 56, he was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
He is survived by his wife and children.
