"Macho Man" Randy Savage, Wrestler, Actor, Pitchman

With a public persona as colorful as his wrestling outfits, Savage was a larger-than-life figure who parlayed his grappling career into a high-profile sideline in commercials for Slim Jim snacks.

Randy Savage, the professional wrestler, actor and commercial pitchman known by the nickname “Macho Man,” died May 20, 2011, in Seminole. Florida. He was 58.

According to news reports, Savage experienced a sudden heart attack while driving with his wife, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in a collision with a tree. His wife survived the incident.

One of the most colorful wrestlers in the sport in the 1980s and 1990s, Savage was born Randall Mario Poffo on November 15, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio. His father, Angelo Poffo, was also a wrestler, as is his younger brother, Lanny Poffo.

In his heyday, Savage wrestled alongside such iconic grapplers as Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan and Ricky the Dragon Steamboat.

Savage, typically dressed in neon Spandex and delivering his catch phrase, “Oooh, yeah!” entered the ring to his theme song “Pomp and Circumstance.”

Outside the ring, he often wore brightly colored cowboy hats and outfits laden with fringe as a spokesman for Slim Jim snacks.

Before he became a wrestler, Savage played minor league baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds organizations, mainly as an outfielder.

His first wife, Elizabeth Hulette, was part of his act for many years as his manager, called Miss Elizabeth or the First Lady of Wrestling. In 2003, after they had divorced, she died from a prescription drug overdose at 42.

When his wrestling career ended, Savage found work as an actor and as a voice-over performer. As an actor, he had a small role in Spider-Man as wrestler Bonesaw McGraw, and as a guest star in comedies like Mad About You. In addition, he lent his raspy voice to video games and such animated series as Family Guy and King of the Hill.

Survivors include his wife, whom he married last spring after having been together for several years, as well as his brother, mother and two stepchildren.
