Mark Haines, Longtime CNBC Anchor

Haines, founding host of the popular morning show Squawk Box, worked at CNBC for more than 20 years.

Mark Haines, a broadcast journalist who spent 22 years at business cable network CNBC on CNBC for 22 years, died May 24, 2011, at his home in Marlboro, New Jersey. He was 65.

News reports did not indicate a cause of death.

Haines was founding anchor of CNBC’s morning show Squawk Box and co-anchor of Squawk on the Street.

His witty, insightful and probing style made him a popular fixture on CNBC. Coworkers remember Haines’ reassuring presence in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Before CNBC, Haines was a news anchor for KYW-TV in Philadelphia, WABC-TV in New York, and WPRI-TV in Providence, before joining CNBC.

In 1995, he became the first host of Squawk Box, helping to shape the early-morning show into essential viewing for Wall Street, weaving pop-culture into coverage of the financial markets.

In 2005, he became the co-host of Squawk on the Street with Erin Burnett.

Haines was born on April 19, 1946, and grew up in Oyster Bay, New York. He graduated from Denison University in 1969 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
