Storm Chasers Star Matt Hughes Dead at 30

The Discovery Channel personality also worked as a meteorologist in his native Kansas.

Matt Hughes, best known as star of the Discovery Channel series Storm Chasers, took his own life on May 26, 2010, in Kansas. He was 30.

News of Hughes' passing was not widely publicized until his last episode of the show aired in early November.

According to news reports, Hughes had suffered from depression.

Hughes also worked as a meteorologist on the staff of ABC affiliate KAKE-TV, in Wichita.

According to the Wichita Eagle newspaper, Hughes first became interested in storms almost 20 years ago when he saw a tornado in south Wichita.

The paper estimated he had seen 100 tornadoes in the 15 years he had been chasing them. His expertise made him an ideal fit for Storm Chasers.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.
