Television Academy Members Make “Digital 50”

Reporter, PGA Rank New Media Elite

Seven members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences were included among the men and women acknowledged by the Hollywood Reporter in the trade publication’s annual “Digital 50” list.

A ranking of the most significant players in digital storytelling compiled by the Hollywood Reporter and the Producers Guild of America’s New Media Council, the “Digital 50” appeared in the November 12 edition of the paper.

At number seventeen was Mark Cuban, owner of Landmark Theaters, cofounder of 2929 Productions, HDNet and HDNet Movies—and a recent contestant on the ABC reality series Dancing with the Stars. On last year’s list, Cuban, a member of the Television Academy’s Interactive Media peer group, ranked at number one, along with business partner Todd Wagner.

Other members of the Interactive Media peer group on the list include: at number twenty, Joanna Drake Earl, president of new media for Current TV, the broadcast venture cofounded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt; number twenty-one was Greg Spiridellis, along with his brother, Evan, creators of the online comedy studio JibJab; at number thirty-eight was last year’s number six, “the father of cross-platform,” Brian Seth Hurst, CEO of the strategic consultancy the Opportunity Management Company and newly elected second vice chairman of the Television Academy; at forty-one was Albert Cheng, executive vice president of digital media at the Disney-ABC Television Group.

Also on the list were two members of the Television Executives peer group: at number twenty-nine was Lucy Hood, who oversees mobile strategy for News Corp., and ranked at fourteen last year; and in position forty-six was Lauren Zalaznick, president of the cable network Bravo.
