Phillip W. Palmer, CAS
Briefly describe what you do.
A production sound mixer is responsible for capturing clear, high-quality audio on set by recording dialogue, ambient sounds and other necessary elements during filming.
What motivated you to become a governor?
I genuinely enjoy being part of the action. I had the pleasure of serving on the Sound Peer Group Executive Committee. I recognized that I could build upon the hard work of our previous governors, bringing about changes in the Academy that reflect our industry’s evolution.
What are some of your proudest accomplishments or credits?
My co-governors and I have implemented several changes to our peer group rules, as well as adjustments to our awards rules, which support and honor the artists. We continue to make that our priority. As a production sound mixer, I have been honored with many Emmy nominations. Every single one of them means the world to me, because it’s a statement by my peers that I have truly achieved exemplary work.
How do you stay informed about emerging trends and developments within your field, and how has that helped support your peer group?
I focus on staying informed and aware of new technologies and developments in the field of sound recording and mixing. Sharing that knowledge and support remain a focal point in our Peer Group. Our Peer Circle discussions play a crucial role in education, facilitating the sharing of ideas and expertise.
What do you hope to accomplish for your peer group as a governor?
I’ve had great experience over the last four years as governor. I am very proud of the improvements and changes we have made to our awards rules, membership requirements and standards.
What do you like most about being a governor at the Television Academy?
The Board of Governors is a truly special and honorable group of industry artists and professionals. Every time I sit down in the board room or log into a committee meeting, I am humbled by the experience. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to myself, “How did I get here?” I’m often reminded by those in the room that I am a part of this group, and my contribution is valuable. It has been a career-defining four years as a governor.
Anything you would like to add?
I am genuinely grateful to the board, the executives and the entire Television Academy staff for all the hard work, care and detail that is put forth into everything the Television Academy does. I plan to continue in some capacity after my term as governor has concluded.
Vicki Lemar
Briefly describe what you do.
I am a re-recording mixer. I mix dialogue and music for broadcast and streaming.
What motivated you to become a governor?
I enjoyed my time on the Peer Group Executive Committee and felt compelled to continue representing my peer group with the Academy.
What are some of your proudest accomplishments or credits?
I am most proud of my two Daytime/Children & Family Emmy nominations.
How do you stay informed about emerging trends and developments within your field, and how has that helped support your peer group?
I read audio publications, browse online public forums and follow social media presence of people I know who are really on top of the latest and greatest tools. Knowing what is available and what is coming helps shape a path forward that works best for our membership.
What do you hope to accomplish for your peer group as a governor?
I most want to achieve some rule changes which will benefit the peer group.
What do you like most about being a governor at the Television Academy?
I love the collaboration with the other governors and learning how much work the Academy does for its members, students and the television community at large. The thought and care taken in the decision-making processes (there are a lot of them!) by this group of people are really something special. The Academy’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion is also something that I am very grateful for.
Anything you would like to add?
I am only in my first year as governor, and I am already looking ahead as to how I can continue my service for the Academy, because I have truly become in awe of this organization and see myself immersed in it for years to come.
