In HBO’s Chernobyl, firefighters battle the blaze at the Ukraine nuclear power plant shortly after the explosion at Reactor Number 4. The fire produced updrafts for nine days, sending radioactive material across parts of the western USSR and Europe. First responders and others died of acute radiation syndrome and, years later, of radiation-induced cancer. Says director Johan Renck: “The most important takeaway has to do with the human sacrifice.”
