Dallas Writer-Producer Arthur Bernard Lewis Dies at 84

Lewis also wrote for such top shows as The Streets of San Francisco and Hawaii Five-O.

Arthur Bernard Lewis, who wrote for several popular television shows in the 1970s and went on to become a writer-producer of the hit series Dallas, died October 30, 2010, in Sherman Oaks California. He was 84.

According to new reports, the cause was pneumonia after a lengthy illness.

Lewis began his TV career in 1962 as a producer on the series The Doctors and the Nurses and went on to write episodes of such series as The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Baretta, Hawaii Five-O and In the Heat of the Night.

In 1978, he joined the hit series Dallas and became executive story editor for 69 episodes. From 1981-1985 he was supervising producer on 113 episodes of the show and solo writer on 63 episodes, most of which he also produced.

He was part of the team that worked on the famous Dallas episode “Who Shot J.R.?” that aired on November 21, 1980, and drew 83 million viewers, making it the highest-rated television episode in history at the time.

Years later, Lewis wrote the made-for-television movies Dallas: J.R. Returns and Dallas: War of the Ewings.

He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter-in-law, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter, a brother and a stepson.
