Tom Aspell, Longtime NBC News Correspondent

In an NBC career spanning nearly 30 years, the New Zealand native covered stories from dozens of global "hot spots."

Tom Aspell, a foreign correspondent who spent nearly three decades with NBC News, died February 11, 2013, following a two-year bout with cancer. He was 62.

A dashing New Zealander Aspell began his journalism career in Great Britain, as a writer and camera operator for Visnews. He moved on to Hong Kong, then Southeast Asia

In 1975 he began covering stories in the Middle East as a freelancer, after which he worked for CBS and ABC in Beirut, Lebanon.

He joined NBC in 1985, as a correspondent based in Cyprus. Over the ensuing years he reported from Kuwait, Baghdad, Bosnia and many other international locales.
