Introduction by the Executive Director
For more than 65 years, the Television Academy Foundation (TVAF) has played a profound role in shaping the television industry. Founded in 1959 during a time of tremendous optimism and opportunity in the industry, the Foundation and its programs have supported generations of emerging talent with the resources and skills to forge rewarding careers in many disciplines. Foundation alumni have gone on to become prominent writers, producers, documentarians, creative executives, and more.
Today, the entertainment industry is undergoing unprecedented transformation. The growing influence of streaming platforms, coupled with the consolidation of big media companies and studios, is taking place amid a backdrop of new emerging technology (AI) and a growing creator economy that is poised to expand the world of storytelling for the screen. The very definition of what television is today is evolving: there are now two generations watching more YouTube than traditional broadcast television.
It is within this context that the Television Academy Foundation embarked on a strategic planning process in partnership with our parent organization, the Television Academy. As the philanthropic arm of the Academy, we were intent on maintaining the Foundation's relevance within the industry in alignment with the Academy.
It's a critical moment to assess the organization's position—and its potential—to determine how best to carry out our mission in the coming years in response to these external challenges. We need to be more intentional in our work, understanding that these uncertain times demand real change. Our strategic plan outlines new initiatives that will provide emerging professionals with increased support as they launch their careers, offering mentorship, robust alumni networking, and increased access to understanding the inner workings of the industry. We are redefining all aspects of our work to acknowledge the changing landscape and to ensure wide accessibility.
This strategic plan is an important step in ensuring the Foundation lives up to its promise and its responsibility to be a trusted resource for the television industry.
What's more, the disruption in the industry demands a fresh perspective on the Foundation's vision and mission. We asked ourselves: Is our message of what we do and whom we serve clear? After robust conversation and deep reflection, our answer was an emphatic no. As part of this strategic planning process, we therefore also revisited our vision and mission statements.
We made a key decision: Our commitment is to emerging professionals -- before they become members of the Academy. While the Foundation engages with industry professionals and leaders at every level, our North Star is to support those as they enter the field and arm them with the confidence to achieve excellence and the tools to build their careers. Our vision is simple:
Inspiring tomorrow's Emmy winners today.
By focusing on our strengths, we will fulfill our mission to honor the rich legacy of the industry by inspiring and educating emerging professionals through mentorship, skills building and networking.
If the Foundation were to choose a single word to describe its path forward, it would be – ACCESS.
