Me and My Emmy: Ryan Rubin

The two‑time Emmy‑winning music editor behind Jim Henson Idea Man and The Mandalorian on what drives his work: “The best part of my job is being part of the score’s evolution.”

EMMY TALLY: Two

HOW HE GOT THE GOLD: As music editor on Jim Henson Idea Man in 2024 and The Mandalorian in 2020.

NOW FOR THE NOMS: Rubin won each time he was nominated.

COMMUNITY PROPERTY: "My wife [Melissa Muik] is also a music editor, and we both won Emmys that found their homes in my office. We were both nominated and won this past year, and that pair lives in her office. Perhaps we could rearrange so our own statues are in their respective studios, but for the moment it seems to work as is."

SHOCK OF THE NEW: “I have just as much appreciation for my second Emmy as I did the first. It’s very rewarding to be recognized for my craft. I would say that the first one was a bit more surprising, as I had no idea what to expect.”

MUSICAL JOURNEY: “The best part of my job is being part of the score’s evolution: from the first spark of an idea where we’re just beginning to imagine what the overall sound or emotional tone of the score could be, to shaping how it actually functions within the story.”

EDIT APPRECIATION: “What inspires me most is the edit. By the time I come in, so many creative decisions have already been made, from the performances and the pacing to the visual tone. The edit is where it all comes together.”
