Me and My Emmy: Sheryl Lee Ralph

The Abbott Elementary star reflects on her career milestone.

EMMY TALLY: One

HOW SHE GOT THE GOLD: As Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022, for playing teacher Barbara Howard in ABC’s Abbott Elementary.

NOW THE NOMS: Ralph has been nominated in the same category from 2023 to ’25.

HONOR THE JOURNEY: "My Emmy lives on top of the piano where I can see it, where it can see me. Not as a trophy, but as a reminder of the years it took to get to this moment. The rooms I walked into unseen. The work I did when there was no guarantee of reward, only passion rewarded. And every time I pass it, it whispers, 'Do it again.'"

EPIC WIN: "I didn’t plan an acceptance speech, because I didn’t think I was going to win, but I sure did live those words in advance. I thought about the people who carried me when I was tired, the moments that almost broke me and the purpose that kept calling me forward, never backward. I sang because it grounded me in truth. I spoke from my heart for anyone who needed to know that all things are possible, and this is what believing looks like. I remain grateful, and that’s the real award."

TEACHER APPRECIATION: "There are so many wonderful things about working on Abbott Elementary. I have the pleasure of working with an incredibly talented group of people, not just in front of the camera but behind it as well. Quinta Brunson created a show that raises up educators, and she is someone to be grateful for."
